The statistics and indicators presented in this 2007 edition of “Science, Technology and Innovation in Europe” are fully in line with the strategic goals set by the European Council in Lisbon in 2000 – the “Lisbon strategy” – and Barcelona in 2002 aiming, respectively, to turn the European Union, by 2010, into the most competitive and dynamic knowledgebased economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion and, by the same date, to raise overall research investment in the EU from around 1.9% of GDP to approaching 3%, of which two thirds should be financed by the business sector. http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/cache/ITY_OFFPUB/KS-EM-08-001/EN/KS-EM-08-001-EN.PDF
